Frequently Asked Questions

1) How do I choose the design of my cake?
Knowing the number of guests will help you to determine the size of your cake. From there we can decide what design elements you would like incorporated into the cake.
Typically weddings have multitiered cakes. It can be elaborately detailed or simple, lending to a classic look. Start looking for inspiration for your wedding cake. Inspiration may come from within yourself as well as your environment. Aside from magazines or books, Martha Stewart Weddings has many great examples and resources on designs and how to choose your baker.
Wedding cake designs may also come from a variety of sources such as the brides dress, wedding invitations, architecture, bedding or other fabrics. Maybe you already can envision your dream wedding cake. Because the wedding cake is one of the focal points put on display we can design something that blends well and incorporates elements of your theme.
2) When should I book my cake?
For wedding cakes we prefer at least 4-8 weeks notice. For other cakes at least 2 weeks notice would be appreciated. Please enquire about our availability as we only accept a limited number of cakes per week. We try our best to accommodate late requests.
3) What is fondant and how does it taste?
Fondant also known as sugar dough is made from a marshmallow base. People commonly mistake this for marzipan which has an almond flavor. Because of the plain taste some clients prefer fondant to be flavored with oils such as raspberry, strawberry and orange.
Fondant gives cake a porcelain finish and seals the cake keeping it fresh. It is also best suited for an outdoor wedding, holding up better to a warm day then buttercream.
Fondant can be modified to different sculpting consistencies. This allows for creating flowers, animals, fabrics, pearls etc. Decorations on cakes are completely edible thanks to this medium.
4) What does Bonn Boni mean?
Bonn Boni in Arabic literally means candy or something sweet. It is exactly like the Italian Bom Boni and very similar to the French term Bon Bon. Bon Boni is a natural fit for everything we do here. Not only do we make cakes but we also specialize in baklava platters, petit four cookies and other confections.
5) Do you deliver?
We will gladly deliver to your special occasion locally, interstate and overseas. Delivery charges will be applied and is dependent upon the distance and difficulty of transport.
6) How much should I expect to pay for my cake?
We normally charge on a per person basis. Our buttercream cakes typically start at US$45. The biggest factors in determining the cost are the number of guests, fillings and flavors used (seasonal availability) as well as labor-intensive design elements that may be requested. If there is a design you must have and you are limited by your budget you can possibly get a smaller version and serve sheet cakes behind the scenes to your guests. 3D and sculpted cakes are quoted on an individual basis as well. Contact us so we can help you in deciding or creating a design along with providing you an estimate.
7) Can I use fresh flowers on my cake?
Fresh flowers can make a beautiful addition to your cake. It is extremely important that you and your florist choose flowers or foliage suitable and safe to be placed on a cake. We would be happy to talk to your florist regarding the sizing and arrangement.
8) Can Bon Boni make gluten or egg free cakes?
We understand the increasing needs of allergy sufferers and we recommend you use specialty suppliers for your specific needs. Right now we only offer eggless chocolate cake as well as organic and diabetic options. As an alternative we could decorate a cake you supply.
9) Does Bon Boni make Halal, Kosher or Vegan cakes?
If you have religious dietary restrictions we will gladly work with you to accommodate your needs. We strictly use only Kosher gelatin for all our products as needed. Kosher gelatin unlike regular gelatin is plant based rather then animal based. We also can substitute vanilla extract with an alcohol-free substitute. Please contact us if this is a concern for you.
10) Do you offer cake consultations?
Absolutely! Consultations offer the best opportunity for our cake designer Iman to meet with you and discuss exactly what you would like and expect in your cake. Consultations are charged US$25 per visit and are deducted from the total cost of the cake. Consultations may also be conducted from the comfort of your home for an additional fee. During your consultation you will have the opportunity to taste 2 cake flavors and 2 fillings. Upon request, extra samples could be available to take home. Because we like to devote our complete attention to the couple we ask that a maximum of 4 people attend the tasting (including the bride and groom).
Before the consultation it would be helpful to have:
  • A realistic budget based on the size of your wedding
  • Pictures of cakes that you like
  • An idea of things you absolutely would hate to have on your wedding cake
  • Ideas or examples of unique elements you would like incorporated into your cake
  • Swatches of wedding colors or a picture of your dress
